Monsaengdao Ecological School is an education centre integrating nature studies and agriculture for girls from ethnic minorities in northern Thailand. The school was established to provide education in a supportive and healing environment for girls at risk of human trafficking and other forms of abuse. Each year, up to 30 high school-aged girls receive free education and accommodation at the school.
The staff and students at the Monsaengdao Ecological School do not have access to clean water for drinking and cooking. While they have access to a reliable and plentiful supply of water from a bore, the water is muddy and has an unpleasant taste due to the elements it contains. The original water system at the school included a filtration system that has broken down and it would be too expensive to repair as it requires people with technical expertise.
The Sustainable Communities Foundation (SCF) works in Northern Thailand building water supply and low technology water systems that can be easily maintained. Members of the Foundation have been to the Monsaengdao school and have developed a project proposal to build a low cost, low tech, easy to maintain filtration system. The challenge now is to raise the $5,000 needed for materials to build the system.
The SCF is made up of volunteers and all funds that it receives go entirely into the projects it does. Over the past six years the foundation has successfully completed water projects in Huai Wad, Pong Hai, Huai Lue, San Klang, Na To Learning Centre and Wiang Klang.
